Difference between a ‘doughnut’ and full-size spare tire

July 16th, 2020 by

You may have heard the term “doughnut” used to describe a spare tire. Such a tire is what’s known as a compact temporary spare, and it is much different than a full-size spare tire.

If your vehicle has a compact temporary spare, then you can only use it for a short period of time. These types of spare tires are meant to serve only in an emergency when you have a flat or blowout. It’s recommended that you drive no more than 50 miles with one of them on. Full-size spare tires, on the other hand, are regular tires that are the right size for your vehicle. These spares are meant to be an extra tire, and if you replace a flat with one, you can continue driving on it until it reaches the end of its life span.
